Halloween is the perfect time of year to explore some of the haunted happenings going on in New York. And with New York being one of those oldest states in the country, trust us – there are plenty! But don’t worry, if you don’t have a lot of time to head outside of Plattsburgh, NY; Burlington, VT; Potsdam, Lake Placid, and Malone, NY, we’ve compiled a list of the best local scary places to visit. So grab your New Honda from DELLA Honda in Plattsburgh and head out for this haunted road trip!
You won’t have to travel very far at all for our first stop. It’s SUNY Plattsburgh Macdonough Hall right here in Plattsburgh, NY! If you’re a local, you’re probably aware that this hall is very haunted. Residents of the hall have witnessed everything from toilets randomly flushing to radios, bathroom lights, and fire alarms mysteriously turning on. They’ve also claimed to have seen strange apparitions. All of these spooky events are apparently due to the fact that the building was built on marshland where a woman’s body and headstone was found.
Next up on our list is St. Albans Bay State Park in St. Albans, VT. If you’re lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it), you’ll catch a glimpse of the “phantom ship” that has been spotted in the St. Albans Bay. The ghost pirates who inhabit the ship call out to nearby fishermen, and the story goes that they are hunting the legendary Champ, the creature who is rumored to live in the bay.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the spooktacular Gold Brook Covered Bridge in Stowe, VT. It’s better known “Emily’s Bridge,” and for good reason. The ghost who resides there, Emily, supposedly hung herself after her fiance never showed up for their elopement. Some people believe she was run over by horses and died after being knocked to the rocky banks below. No matter who you believe, everyone can agree that there have been some strange noises including screams, scratches. Some have even seen Emily herself.
By now, you’ve probably worked up quite an appetite, so we recommend heading over to American Flatbread in Burlington, VT. This was previously Carbus Restaurant, most famously known for a former employee shooting himself in the basement – yikes! Employees are warned to proceed to the basement with caution, and many have been locked in the walk-in freezer, which slams shut with no explanation.
Save the best for last with this mix of horror and history at the Plattsburgh Airforce Base. There are a number of spooks here, including multiple ghost sightings (children, a Revolutionary War soldier who has been spotted marching back and forth, and a lady in white who haunts the woods nearby). If you’re brave enough, head over to the Old Gym, which was once used as a wartime morgue where visitors have heard pounding and screams. Finally, if you’re really brave, head down to the red basement, painted that color to cover up the blood.
